![]() ![]() Those were all cases of large scale issues that involve the gods themselves, I think this is just a case of two types of creatures that just weren't built to get along with one another. I don't think the hatred is like that of surface elves and Drow, or Duergar and other dwarves. A cloud giant only needs to roll a 7 to hit with their rock toss, and can cast fly on themselves if needed, and has the same STR score and size as the dragon so grapples can happen. Even a CR 17 adult red dragon could find themselves in trouble if they end up pissing off a cloud giant, then find out that he's got 4 friends that are more than happy to teach an overgrown lizard some manners. Not to mention that while Dragons have the capacity to become stronger than giants (in terms of Challenge Rating at least) and having the advantage of flight/breath weapons, they are also almost always solitary creatures whereas most giants can be at least somewhat sociable among their own kind. ![]() Being pissed off about a couple of the bigger Giants that live "nearby" means going up against something that potentially go toe to toe with them in a fight. It's one thing for a dragon to get annoyed or upset with one of the small races, they can just eat the offender or make a quick fly by to terrorize the village and probably be done with it. I feel like even if there wasn't some grand affront perpetrated by one side or the other these two races would find themselves fighting/hating each other sooner or later just from decades of perceived offenses, whether intentional or not. Both races are also usually pretty egotistical, viewing their race as the supreme being in the world (especially if they're the higher tiers of the giant races). Normally apex predators don't interact unless they're competing for the same territory/prey, but these are two intelligent sentient races that could definitely intrude upon each others territory. Giants and Dragons are some of the earliest beings to exist on the material plane, both are creatures of great strength which put them in the top echelons of the food chain. I've heard this animosity as well, and I know that WoTC mentions war(s) between dragons and giants in the ancient past, I'm not sure if my opinion on it is just opinion or if I read something in the past that stuck in my head, but here's my take: ![]()
